We recently wrote about the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) HERE, an exciting new federal immigration program aimed at attracting new immigrants to rural and northern communities in Canada.
This five-year initiative will help match employers who are experiencing an acute labour shortage with skilled foreign workers. One of the 11 communities that has been chosen is Vernon, British Columbia.
Here are 4 things to know about living in Vernon, British Columbia:
1) Location: Vernon located in the Okanagan Valley, arguably one of the most desirable regions in Canada in which to live. With a population of approximately 42,000, the area is known for its long warm summers and mild winter climate. In proximity to Vancouver, Vernon is approximately 4 1/2 hours by car from the city.
2) Growing Sectors: Vernon is considered one of the most economically diverse communities in British Columbia. The community boasts traditional resource sectors including forestry and agriculture, as well vibrant sectors including tourism, technology, manufacturing, retail and service sectors.
3) Healthcare: In Canada, public health insurance is available to all eligible residents including Canadian citizens and permanent residents. In British Columbia, the Medical Services Plan or MSP covers the cost of medically-necessary insured doctor services.
4) Education:
Vernon is home to quality secondary and post-secondary institutions including Okanagan College and the University of British Columbia-Okanagan. The elementary and post-secondary education system offers a wide variety of programs including french immersion, career and apprenticeship programs, Montessori, students without borders, Aboriginal education and forestry.
