International Education Strategy
Canada has just launched a new International Education Strategy aimed at
diversifying the education sector, boosting Canada’s innovation capacity and promoting global ties
In 2018, more than 721,000 international students studied in Canada, the
Government of Canada has stated that most international students are often
ideal candidates for permanent residency. In fact, nearly 54,000 former
students became permanent residents in Canada in 2018.
Concentration of Students
Currently, more than 50% of Canada’s international students come from two countries, India and China. In addition, international students are also
concentrated in large cities such as Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary and Montreal.
Diversifying the Sector
The Strategy focuses on attracting students from a wider range of countries, as well as to a greater variety of regions and schools. For example schools such as Seneca College, University of British Columbia and University of Alberta are popular with international students. However schools such as New Brunswick Community College in Moncton, New Brunswick and Brandon University in Brandon, Manitoba may offer international students smaller class sizes and friendly environments. The government wants to diversify the students who choose to study in Canada.
Other initiatives include providing additional scholarships for international students to study in Canada which will be valued at $5 million over 5 years.
